A form of escapism, entertainment is a way to take your mind off of problems or other stressors. It also stimulates the brain, causing it to release seratonin and dopamine. Entertainment often focuses on topics that the human brain was evolved to react deeply to, such as murders and social backstabbing.
Bates and Ferri (2010) define entertainment as an activity understood objectively that involves communication between text and audience, possesses an external stimulus, offers pleasure, requires an audience for its existence and happens in a passive form. These six elements are what separates entertainment from boredom. Entertaiment has been around for a long time. Some examples include theatre, sports and films. But more recently, new forms of entertainment have been created.
