Fashion is a way to express yourself through clothing, accessories and even hair styles. It’s something that is constantly changing and can be influenced by anything from the weather to cultural beliefs and religions. It’s also known to change much faster than other fields like thought and language. Fashion can be found in almost every aspect of human society but has been most commonly linked with clothing, costume and footwear.
In high school, a boy wearing green hair and multiple piercings might wear a certain style to deliver a message of rebellion and separation from the rest of his group. While to someone else, this might be a sign of conformity and adherence to the status quo. In either case, it’s important to realize that while a specific style may reflect one’s identity, it also can be used as a tool for manipulation and social control.
Clothing is one of the biggest industries in the world, and it’s a very powerful and influential one. Everyday, millions of people design, sew, glue, dye and transport clothing to stores across the globe. Many people consciously and subconsciously take advantage of the constant changes in fashion to express themselves in unique and interesting ways.
The direction of fashion is closely tied with the flow of popular culture. From tv sitcoms (bare mid-riffs and baggy pants on 90210) to music trends, books and art. However, for a new trend to be considered fashion, it must be widely adopted and followed. It’s hard to tell how a particular outfit goes from being worn in the streets of England to being seen at a couture show in Paris, but it’s often determined by the fashion houses and their celebrity clients.
